HP Oracle Database Machine & Exadata Storage Server Overview
Charlie Garry, Oracle

Data volumes are exploding generating larger and larger databases, and getting to the right data instantly requires a new way to manage today’s systems. New and revolutionary solutions and methodologies are converging to address this need, and taking a fresh look at the challenge reveals new insights. This keynote will examine the intersection of new database, data warehouse, and storage solutions that deliver on these requirements.  You'll be provided with a technical overview describing the new HP Oracle Database Machine and Exadata Storage Server hardware and software.

Mr. Garry has over 20 years of experience in Information Technology. He is a former Vice President and Director for META Group’s Technology Research Services. Mr. Garry’s focus has been on relational database and infrastructure design, support staffing, licensing/pricing and data management best practices. Throughout his career, Mr. Garry has worked with hundreds of companies delivering support and education in areas such as database design, performance tuning, backup/recovery, licensing, and negotiation strategies. He has been a frequently requested speaker at noted database conferences such as Oracle World, IOUG, IDUG, Teradata Partners and the MySQL User Conference and was the author of a regular column for eWEEK.com. Mr. Garry was a founding member of Divine Interventures and Vice President of Infrastructure Strategies for Platinum Technology as well as Director of Field Operations for Platinum’s data warehousing/BI division.

Lower Costs, Improve support, and deploy faster with Oracle Enterprise Linux & Oracle VM
John Devereaux, Solution Architect, Oracle Linux & Oracle VM, Oracle

Cut costs and improve support by consolidating under Oracle's Unbreakable Linux support program. The industries first "Enterprise" class support program for Linux provides support for RHEL & OEL with support options such as Premier backporting, comprehensive management, and extensive real world testing all at a significantly lower cost. Combined with Oracle's virtualization technology (Oracle VM) through Grid-based Virtualization, organizations can significantly reduce costs with faster deployments and consolidated management capabilities. Customers now have a single point of enterprise-class support for their entire virtualization environments, including the Linux operating system, Oracle Database, Fusion Middleware, and Application software.  Topics covered:
Oracle Enterprise Linux/Unbrekable Linux Support Overview
Oracle Enterprise Linux (OEL) Release Cycle & Distribution Comparison with Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL)
Oracle VM Server Virtualization Technologies
Oracle Grid and Oracle Virtualization
Oracle VM 2.1.2 Technical Review
Oracle VM Architecture & System Design

John Devereaux worked as a Systems Engineer at Digital Equipment Corporation on the DEC Unix / VMS Systems, at Compaq and Hewlett Packard as a Engineer working on the DEC Alpha Unix Systems, and at Redhat as the SME for Healthcare Vertical / Financial Vertical Markets. He served in the Military including Just Cause and Desert Storm.

Masters in Database Proposal

Masters in Database Proposal
Scott Canaan, Sr. Database Administrator, RIT

The B. Thomas Golisano College of Computing and Information Sciences at RIT is putting together a Master’s degree program in database.  There are three areas of study: Database Administration, Data Analytics, and Data Architecture.  We are getting close to the point where we have to submit the program to the University then the New York State Department of Education for approval.  One of the requirements is to make sure that the degree program is useful in the marketplace.  For this, we need feedback from those people that will be interested in getting the degree or will be interested in employing those that get the degree.

Scott Canaan Graduated from RIT in 1988 and has been working with relational databases since 1989.  He has been working with the Oracle database since 1992 (version 6) and has worked at RIT as a Senior Database Administrator since 1998, primarily with Oracle and some SQLServer.

Data Modeling Essentials

Data Modeling Essentials
Ray Makela, IBM

Most of the ERP, CRM, and custom applications that drive your business operations rely on complex relational database technology. It is not uncommon for application databases to contain dozens, hundreds or even thousands of database tables and just as many data relationships. Database administrators are often challenged to navigate through the data model to ensure the referential integrity of the data each time a new application enhancement or upgrade is being developed. The complexity of relational databases is not limited to large-scale systems. Even an application database of less than a dozen tables can support complex relationships and be accessed from other applications, presenting a challenge for DBA’s to navigate and manage effectively.

In this session, we will discuss ways of gathering the details needed to make smart decisions about the databases you manage.  Understanding the different relationships that affect the data and not just those found easily in database catalogs and models, but those created dynamically through application logic.
