Writing Flexible, Reusable and Independent PL/SQL

Writing Flexible, Reusable and Independent PL/SQL – a Dev’s Perspective
Matt Baron, Paychex

Supporting an application on a set of large databases often requires data updates to address specific problems. Even in cases of significant complexity, developers often approach PL/SQL scripts as hacks rather than the distinct programs that they are. There are a handful of patterns/tricks that have proven very useful when writing PL/SQL programs for limited execution to address specific problems. The focus of this talk is on what those patterns can buy a developer in terms of flexibility and design, without compromising (and sometimes significantly improving) performance.

Matt Baron graduated from SUNY Brockport in May 2010 with a BS in Computer Science and a minor in math. He has been working for Paychex as a developer since June 2010, working mostly with Java applications backed by Oracle databases. His focus has been primarily on maintenance and support for large applications, divided between quarter/year end processing, and the timely collection and disbursement of funds from clients to government agencies. The contents of this discussion focus primarily on the challenges faced when addressing widespread data issues split across numerous Production databases, with various security and policy restrictions severely limiting the extent of modifications possible for a PL/SQL script written by Development to support an incident.
