- Visualize to Fortify: Backing GeoIP Blocking with Real Firewall Data
Travis Kench, Mike Kozlowski, Hitesh Upadhyay (SUNY ITEC Security Team)
In today’s threat landscape, GeoIP blocking remains a powerful yet often debated and underutilized security
control. This presentation equips security professionals with data-driven insights and executive-ready reports
needed to confidently justify GeoIP policies. We will explore compelling visualizations and log analyses
demonstrating GeoIP blocking’s effectiveness, supported by the latest ITEC OSC Team's research and aligned to
industry guidance and regulatory requirements, including the Code of Federal Regulations Title 28 C.F.R. Part
202 and Executive Order 14117. You'll learn how to counter common objections such as the “What if they’re
next door?” argument using real-world context and threat modeling. The presentation also addresses practical
challenges of implementing GeoIP controls, especially when navigating C-suite permissions and legacy
infrastructure limitations. For organizations facing these hurdles, we will present an alternative approach
leveraging Zero Trust Network Access architecture via Cloudflare to achieve similar outcomes with greater
flexibility and scalability.
