Copyright VS Community - Feb. 22, Buffalo

Hello everyone. As some of you may have heard, Richard Stallman will be coming to the University at Buffalo. On behalf of the University at Buffalo Association for Computing Machinery, I would like to invite all of you to this free event. The title of the event is Copyright VS Community.
The time and location of the event is 6:00pm Monday February 22, University at Buffalo North Campus, Norton 112. Again there is no admission charge for the event. Please feel more than welcome to bring any guests. Also, please circulate this email to any user groups you may find pertinent.

An abstract of the talk is as follows:

Copyright developed in the age of the printing press, and was designed to fit with the system of centralized copying imposed by the printing press.
But the copyright system does not fit well with computer networks, and only draconian punishments can enforce it.

The global corporations that profit from copyright are lobbying for draconian punishments, and to increase their copyright powers, while suppressing public access to technology. But if we seriously hope to serve the only legitimate purpose of copyright--to promote progress, for the benefit of the public--then we must make changes in the other direction.
